Vitalij Kowaljow returns to Dutch National Opera from 9 September 2017 to sing the role of Padre Guardiano in Verdi La forza del destino. Conducted by Michele Mariotti and directed by Christof Loy, the cast for this production also includes James Creswell, Eva-Maria Westbroek and Franco Vassallo. Following the opening night, performances run until October 1.


Further highlights this season for Kowaljow include a return to the Metropolitan Opera, New York as Raimondo Lucia di Lammermoor and the Bayerische Staatsoper as Fiesco Simon Boccanegra. He also performs Wotan in a new Ring Cyle with Semperoper Dresden and Christian Thielemann, and for the Beijing Music Festival.

Vitalij Kowaljow reprises the role of Zaccaria in Verdi Nabucco once again this month, this time at Bayerische Staatsoper from 20 May 2017. Yannis Kokkos’ production is conducted by Paolo Carignani.


In recent years, Kowaljow has performed the role in Daniele Abbado’s production under the baton of Daniel Oren at the Liceu and Nicola Luisotti at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. Earlier this season, Kowaljow performed the role in Leo Muscato’s production for Monte Carlo Opera under the baton of Giuseppe Finzi, to critical acclaim:

Vitalij Kowaljow makes his debut at the Badisches Staatstheater on 11 February 2017 when he sings Wotan in Die Walküre under the baton of Justin Brown. The production is directed by Yuval Sharon, who received the Götz-Friedrich Prize recognizing the outstanding achievements of young directors in the area of the music theater.

Vitalij Kowaljow and Alisa Kolosova travel to France this month to perform in a special episode of TV programme Musiques en fête broadcasted live from the Chorégies d’Orange on France 3 on 20 June 2016. Musique en fête is one of France's most popular television programmes, broadcast in primetime to an audience of millions. Watched by a live audience of 10,000 at the Roman Théâtre antique d'Orange, Kowaljow and Kolosova sing arias by Boito, Tchaikovsky, Verdi and Saint-Saëns. Vitalij Kowaljow returns to the Grand Théâtre de Genève on 1 February 2016 to sing the role of Padre Guardiano in a concert performance of La forza del destino conducted by Paolo Arrivabeni. Kowaljow sings alongside Franco Vassallo as Don Carlo, Alexander Teliga as the Marquis and Aquiles Machado as Don Alvaro.


Kowaljow, who has previously performed as both Padre Guardiano and Il Marchese di Calatrava at Bayerische Staatsoper, has been universally praised for his “warm-toned, sonorous voice” (Die Welt).

Following his triumphant company debut last year as Wotan Die Walküre, Vitalij Kowaljow returns to the Mariinsky to make his Stars of the White Nights Festival debut on 28 June 2015, performing the role of Kochubey in Tchaikovsky’s Mazeppa, conducted by Valery Gergiev.

Alisa Kolosova and Vitalij Kowaljow both make their house debuts at Theatro Municipal São Paulo on 30 May 2015 in Marco Gandini’s production of Eugene Onegin. Kowaljow sings the role of Gremin and Kolosova sings Olga. Vitalij Kowaljow’s performance of Zaccaria in a memorable performance of Nabucco from the Royal Opera House in London, was released on DVD by Sony Classical on 16 March 2015. In this production, recorded in April 2013 Plácido Domingo made his debut in the role of Nabucco – in the bicentenary year of Verdi’s birth.


The production was directed by Daniele Abbado, who took the opera’s theme of the enslavement of the Jewish people as his cue to give the opera a 20th-century setting. Kowaljow’s performance as the High Priest of the Hebrews was critically well received:

On Wednesday 5 June, acclaimed bass Vitalij Kowaljow will sing at very short notice the role of Wotan Die Walküre with Valery Gergiev at the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg. Much sought-after for his Verdi interpretations, Kowaljow started exploring the Wagner repertoire a few years ago when he was offered the Achim Freier Ring Cycle at Los Angeles Opera, under the baton of James Conlon. The debut was met with critical and public acclaim:
