Sarah Tynan


    Following Sarah Tynan’s acclaimed role debut singing Susanna The Marriage of Figaro at English National Opera last season, she has been invited to make her role debut as Giulietta I Capuleti e I Montecchi for Opera North, to make her house debut at Houston Grand Opera singing Sophie Der Rosenkavalier and sing Servillia La Clemenza di Tito in concert with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightement and Edward Gardner in London and New York.

    Sarah studied at the Royal Northern College of Music and the Royal Academy of Music where she was awarded the Queen's Commendation for Excellence. While she was still a student, she took on the main soprano role of Iphis in Handel's Jephtha in the acclaimed Welsh National Opera production conducted by Paul McCreesh. Her success there led to an invitation to join the English National Opera Young Singers Programme, and then to become an ENO Company Principal a position she held until 2006/7.

    Her roles at the ENO have included most recently her critically acclaimed role debut as Sophie Der Rosenkavalier, Tytania A Midsummer Night's Dream , Woodbird Siegfried, Iphis Jephtha , Atalanta Xerxes , Sister Constance The Carmelites (recorded for Chandos), Yum-Yum Mikado , Dalinda Ariodante , and Gianetta The Gondoliers .

    Other operatic roles have included Bella Midsummer Marriage for St Endellion Festival with Richard Hickox, Pretty Polly in Birtwistle's Punch and Judy at the Teatro Nacional S. João in Porto, the Governess in Britten's Turn of the Screw , Melanto and Fortune Il ritorno di Ulisse in patria for WNO and last season Megan in James MacMillan's new opera The Sacrifice also for WNO.

    At the RCM, Sarah sang the title role in The Cunning Little Vixen conducted by Sir Charles Mackerras, Zerlina Don Giovanni conducted by Sir Colin Davis, Drusilla L'incoronazione di Pop pea and Feu/Rossignol L'Enfant et les sortilèges .

    Sarah combines her operatic engagements with a busy concert career. She recently sang in a semi staged performance of The Pilgrim’s Progress with the Philharmonia Orchestra under Richard Hickox, she has sung concerts with  Richard Hickox for the Mostly Mozart Festival at the Barbican, Mozart Requiem conducted by Sir Roger Norrington at the Spitalfields Festival, Mahler Symphony No.2 with the Netherlands Symphony Orchestra conducted by Jaap van Zweden, Messiah with the Halle Orchestra and a tour of China with the LPO, and a programme of rare Mozart arias with the Academy of Ancient Music and Paul Daniel. Sarah has also recorded the Dew Fairy Hansel and Gretel with Sir Charles Mackerras for Chandos.

    Forthcoming engagements include Dalinda Ariodante Opera de Oviedo, Miss Wordsworth Albert Herringfor the Opéra Comique and Opéra de Rouen, her BBC Proms debut with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Sir Andrew Davis, Haydn’s Creation with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe in Lisbon and concerts with the CBSO and the orchestra of Opera North.
