Marin Alsop celebrates her twentieth anniversary as Music Director of the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music. This year’s festival will include seven world premieres, two US premieres and nine West Coast premieres, all written in honour of Maestra Alsop. There will be fifteen Composers-in-Residence, including Mason Bates, Michael Daugherty and Elena Kats-Chernin. Among the guest soloists will be Jean-Yves Thibaudet, who will give the West Coast premiere of James MacMillan’s Piano Concerto No.3.
Alsop has described the Cabrillo Festival, where she has built a remarkable and devoted audience of new music over the past two decades, as an “artistic oasis”. As The San Francisco Classical Voice has said, at its centre is Alsop herself:
“…an indefatigable new-music specialist who, in addition to conducting duties, serves as Cabrillo’s intrepid programming mastermind. Each summer, the award-winning maestra returns to Cabrillo with a variety of emerging works that please the faithful while turning first-timers into lifetime subscribers.”
