Kelley O’Connor will perform with the Philharmonia Orchestra conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen at the prestigious Edinburgh International Festival on August 23 in the Usher Hall. She returns to Edinburgh after her fantastic performance at the opening of the 2010 Festival. Kelley will sing Ravel’s Shéhérazade, a song cycle based on three symbolist poems by Tristan Klingsor of the eponymous heroine's tales of the Orient. The concert also includes Scriabin’s Poem of Ecstasy and Stravinsky’s visceral The Rite of Spring.
This is Kelley’s second visit to Scotland this season, after she performed Lieberson’s Neruda Songs with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen in April with Stéphane Denève. She has a busy next season in the States but will return to Europe in summer 2012 for the role of Federico García Lorca in Golijov’s Ainadamar at the Teatro Real in Madrid. Kelley’s other engagements next season include the world premiere of a new oratorio The Gospel According to the Other Mary by John Adams with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, concerts with the Cleveland Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony, the Atlanta Symphony and St Louis Symphony Orchestras, an appearance at New York Lincoln Center’s Mostly Mozart Festival and Ursule in Béatrice et Bénedict for Opera Boston.
