The City of London Sinfonia, founded by the late Richard Hickox, performed a special 40th anniversary concert at the BBC Proms in August.
In a programme that included a performance of Mozart’s Requiem and featuring mezzo soprano Renata Pokupic and baritone Henk Neven (replacing an indisposed James Rutherford), Stephen Layton conducted the CLS in this special programme which also featured the world premiere of Colin Matthews’ No Man’s Land. Richard Hickox first approached Matthews with the idea of commissioning a new work to celebrate CLS’s anniversary shortly before his untimely death in 2008. Set to text by Christopher Reid and written as a memorial to the losses of the First World War, No Man’s Land is dedicated to Hickox’s memory.
