Midori presents a special focus on ‘The New World’ at the 2010 Edinburgh International Festival in keeping with the Festival’s theme for that year. She begins her time in Edinburgh with a special ‘Artist Conversation’ on 25 August, followed by a recital with pianist Ozgur Aydin on 26 August where she will perform works including Bloch’s Sonata No.2 and the Argentinian composer Davidovsky’s Duo Capriccioso. Bloch, who was born in Geneva and studied the violin with Eugène Ysaÿe at the conservatory in Brussels amongst others, moved to the US in 1916 and took American citizenship in 1924; the Sonata No.2 performed by Midori and Ozgur Aydin dates from that same year and was written in Cleveland where Bloch was appointed the first Musical Director of the newly formed Cleveland Institute of Music in December 1920.

For her concert on 28 August 2010, Midori will perform Bernstein’s Serenade for Violin and Orchestra with Donald Runnicles and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. The serenade was written by Bernstein in 1924 and was inspired by Plato’s Symposium. Launching his fourth programme as festival director, Jonathan Mills said: "This year the festival takes us on a journey around the contemporary cultures of the Americas and Australasia. We have shifted our centre of gravity from Europe towards these intriguing and complex continents."
