Michel van der Aa - With my ear to the ground
In October 2010, Dutch composer Michel van der Aa composed a minute-long opera, titled With my ear to the ground, in just 24 hours in reaction to the unfolding dramatic rescue of the 33 Chilean miners. This video is from the opera's world premiere
Van der Aa was contacted by the prime-time Dutch TV talk-show 'De Wereld Draait Door' and asked to write a piece about the events unfolding in South America. The commission came with a deadline of the following day.
Working with a number of collaborators, including librettist Nico Dijkshoorn, van der Aa delivered the 60-second micro-opera in under 24 hours. The piece, which fuses music, film and visuals, was premiered on Wednesday 13 October, live on television. The performance starred well-known Dutch actor Thom Hoffman as a miner (pictured right, in a still from the opera), and mezzo soprano Tania Kross.
