The Swedish soprano Malin Hartelius studied at Vienna Conservatoire with celebrated teacher Margarethe Bence. After starting her career as a member of the Vienna State Opera from 1989 to 1991 she was contracted by the Zurich Opera House appearing since then in roles such as Pamina, Adele, Konstanze, Aennchen, Donna Elvira and Sophie.
After her debuts at the Ludwigsburger Festspiele (1990) and Schwetzinger Festspiele (1991), she appeared for the first time at the Salzburg Festival in 1992 as Barbarina Le Nozze di Figaro. In 1993 she made her recital debut at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris.
In 1997 the young soprano had her international breakthrough with a highly praised performance as Adina L'Elisir d'Amore at Frankfurt Opera, and an overwhelming success as Blondchen at the Salzburger Festspiele under the baton of Marc Minkowski. She also made her debut at the Munich Opernfestspiele as Najade Ariadne auf Naxos. As a member of the ensemble at the Zurich Opera she sang in various productions (including Mitridate with Frans Brüggen). Another important debut followed in 1998, when Malin sang Sophie Der Rosenkavalier at the Berlin Opera Unter den Linden.
In Autumn 1999 she was invited by the Opéra National de Paris to perform in Rameau's Les Indes Galantes (William Christie) and in 2000 as Adele Die Fledermaus (Armin Jordan). In the same year she also performed Pamina in the new Die Zauberflöte production at Zurich Opera.
In the 2000/2001 season, Malin Hartelius took part in John Elliot Gardiner's Bach Cantata Pilgrimage, and made her debut as Marzellina Fidelio at the Bayerische Staatsoper Munich under the baton of Zubin Mehta. She was praised for her appearance in Harnoncourt's realisation of Schubert's rarely performed opera Alfonso und Estrella at the Zurich Opera, and performed at the Salzburg Festival in various concerts with the Vienna Philharmonic, conducted by Wolfgang Sawallisch and Sir Charles Mackerras. The following year she sang Adele in the new production of Die Fledermaus and in concerts with the Mozarteum Orchestra under the direction of Ivor Bolton.
In 2002/2003 she sang Konstanze in a new production at the Zürich Opera House and was invited to sing this role at the Bayerische Staatsoper Munich, at the Hamburgische Staatsoper, with Concerto Köln at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam and in Luzern. She also performed in this role in her debut at the Festival d'Aix en Provence in 2004.
Highlights of the 2005/06 season include concerts with the Accademia Santa Cecilia, Cleveland Orchestra, Concertgebouw Orchestra, Gewandhaus Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, Orchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, Orchestra Giuseppe Verdi, Philharmonia Orchestra, Rundfunk-Sinfonie-Orchester Berlin, Tonhalle Orchestra. She returned to the Opéra Bastille de Paris (Les Indes Galantes, Rameau) and sang Sophie in a new production in Zurich and at the Vienna State Opera. At the Bayerische Staatsoper München she performed as Konstanze as well as Adele Die Fledermaus , and made her debut as Donna Elvira in Zurich.
2006/07 projects included concerts and recitals in Austria, Spain and Sweden, the Netherlands, Germany and Switzerland as well as in Cleveland and New York; and new productions of Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro (Contessa) and Schumann's Szenen aus Goethes Faust (Gretchen). In Autumn 2007 she returned to the Vienna State Opera for Sophie Der Rosenkavalier, and toured with the Cleveland Orchestra with performances at Carnegie Hall and the Vienna Musikverein and with the Zürich Opera House for performances in Japan.
Malin has recorded Bach's Christmas Oratorio (Combattimento Consort), Handel's Messiah for Sony Classical, Mozart's Il Sogno di Scipione for Astrée as well as Haydn's Die Schöpfung and Brahms' Ein deutsches Requiem for Farao Classics, "The Bach Cantata Pilgrimage" (with John Eliot Gardiner for SDG) in 2000, and appears on various recordings of the Zürich Opera House productions and the Salzburg Festival.
