Susan Bickley has a busy month ahead in Germany as she makes her house debut at the Oper Frankfurt in the role of La Nourrice in Paul Dukas’s Ariane et barbe-bleue, which brings together the French tale of Bluebeard and the Greek story of Ariadne. This is a new role for Bickley, Erik Nielsen conducts and Sandra Leupold directs the production, which opens on 11 February. There are three further performances on 19 and 24 February, and 2 March.

Following her debut in Frankfurt, Bickley will perform the role of La Madre in Luigi Nono’s Al gran sole carico d’amore, which premieres at the Berlin Staatsoper on 1 March. There are further performances on 3, 5, 9 and 11 March. This is a revival of the Salzburg Festival production of 2009, directed by Katie Mitchell and conducted by Ingo Metzmacher, who will also direct and conduct in Berlin. Bickley sang in the Salzburg performances and received rave reviews for her portrayal. Hugh Canning, reviewing for Opera magazine wrote: “Bickley scored a personal triumph as both actor and singer... her consoling melismata at the start of Part 2 were among the most beautiful sounds to be heard."

Following her time in Germany, Susan returns to the UK to sing Brangäne Tristan und Isolde for Welsh National Opera.
