On 3 February Jean-Guihen Queyras and the Utah Symphony, under the direction of Thierry Fischer, give the world premiere of Michael Jarrell’s cello concerto Emergences (Nachlese VI).

This event is the result of a new commissioning policy instigated by the Swiss conductor when he took up his Music Directorship in Utah. Fischer will repeat the work with the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande and Queyras in 2014.

Fischer has already given world premieres of several works by compatriot Michael Jarrell with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales during his time as Principal Conductor, notably his triple concerto Sillages at the BBC Proms in 2009, with soloists Emmanuel Pahud, Francois Leleux and Paul Meyer.

In other news, last week Fischer conducted the London Sinfonietta at Southbank Centre in a concert celebrating Wolfgang Rihm’s 60th birthday. The programme included the UK premieres of several works by Rihm as well as Jörg Widmann’s Dubairische Taenze: “all superbly conducted by Thierry Fischer” (The Guardian); “a magnificent whirlwind of sound, performed with tremendous warmth by the Sinfonietta and conductor Thierry Fischer (Daily Telegraph).
