On Friday 23 May, Joyce DiDonato will receive an Honorary Doctorate in Music at the Juilliard School’s 109th Commencement Ceremony. The Juilliard has been awarding honorary degrees since 1987, and this year several other artists will receive honorary doctorates including actress Viola Davis, architect Frank Owen Gehry, composer Philip Glass, choreographer Lar Lubovitch and musician and composer Marcus Roberts. The ceremony will be streamed live at live.juilliard.edu.
DiDonato also gives the commencement address at the ceremony to the Juilliard’s graduating class of 289 students, joining an esteemed list of former speakers, including musician and composer Wynton Marsalis, actress Laura Linney, composer John Adams and playwright Terrence McNally.
DiDonato (a native of Kansas City) will also receive an Honorary Doctor of Arts degree from the University of Kansas this year, in recognition of her notable contributions to the field of opera and opera education. Earlier this year, DiDonato was made an Honorary Member of the Royal Academy of Music (Hon RAM).
