On July 4, tenor Ben Johnson will give a recital at St Margaret Lothbury for the City of London Festival. The programme reflects this year’s festival theme of Oceania, Australia and New Zealand, incorporating ideas of travel and discovery. The recital includes Heine settings by Schumann, compared and contrasted with those by Liszt, his near contemporary whose bicentenary falls this year. Grainger, one of Australia’s most creative travellers, is represented by some of his English, Scottish and Norwegian songs placed alongside works by Quilter, his English contemporary, Grieg, his great friend and Norway’s foremost composer.
On July 8, Ben takes part in another recital, this time at Wigmore Hall with Graham Johnson. The programme, "A Night in Venice – A Serenade to Serenissima", includes works by Vaughan Williams, Rossini, Strauss, Schumann, Fauré and Massenet.
