Paul McCreesh returns to the Verbier Festival to conduct a concert performance of Mozart Le nozze di Figaro on 21 July. Gábor Bretz leads the cast as Figaro, and Sylvia Schwartz plays Susanna. McCreesh has gained a strong reputation for conducting opera, with past highlights including Handel Tamerlano at Madrid’s Teatro Real, featuring Plácido Domingo, and Gluck Orphée et Eurydice at Welsh National Opera.
McCreesh returns to the opera pit in October/November 2012 to conduct performances of Handel Agrippina at Flanders Opera Ghent.
The Brinkburn Music Festival, of which McCreesh is Artistic Director, runs from 6 to 8 July in Northumberland, UK. McCreesh and his Gabrieli Consort & Players perform Bach St Matthew Passion at Brinkburn Priory on 8 July in an intimate version for eight solo voices. McCreesh and Gabrieli Consort & Players also visit the Festival de Beaune, France, where they perform Purcell The Fairy Queen on 14 July.
Paul McCreesh’s most recent release last month on his own record label, Winged Lion, has already received excellent reviews. A New Venetian Coronation 1595, an updated re-recording of his original award-winning 1989 disc to celebrate the group’s 30th anniversary, was given a five-star review by The Independent (London), calling it “never less than enthralling”. Hugh Canning in The Sunday Times (London) writes: “Even if you own the classic Virgin disc, this new version is a must-buy.”
