Alessandro Talevi travels to Colorado this month to direct a new production of Benjamin Britten’s haunting chamber opera The Turn of the Screw, which will open on 14 July.

Talevi’s production of this work (which he has already directed once before, for Opera North) questions our concept of ‘reality’, blurring the boundaries between truth and imagination. The challenge of translating the opera’s inherent mystery and ambiguity to the stage is one that grabs Talevi:

“For the Central City production, my designers and I have gone for a very different visual approach… I am fascinated by the possibility of using totally different means to present what is essentially the same concept as the Opera North production. It is important as a director to keep exploring a work and finding new ways of articulating its themes.”

He continues in his Director’s Notes:

“We have created a scenic environment that questions the concept of ‘reality’. It plays with the idea of visual perception… how the eye translates strange or unusual information into concrete, recognisable images”.
