The Ensemble Orchestral de Paris has named James MacMillan as its Composer in Residence for the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons, alongside French composer Thierry Eschaich. The news was announced during the orchestra’s press conference yesterday, at which the new artistic team for 2012/13 of Chief Conductor Thomas Zehetmair, Principal Guest Conductor Roger Norrington and Artist in Association Francis Leleux was also publicly introduced.
As part of the Composer in Residence role, the Ensemble Orchestral de Paris has invited MacMillan to conduct a number of performances, including on 25 January 2012 in a programme of Stravinsky, Shostakovich and MacMillan’s concertino for trumpet and strings Seraph, and again on 22 January 2013, both at the Theatre des Champs-Elysées.
As co-commissioner of MacMillan’s Violin Concerto, on 21 July 2011 the Ensemble Orchestral de Paris gave the French premiere of the work with Vadim Repin at the Montpellier Festival (conducted by Joseph Swensen). The Paris premiere is to follow in April 2012. The orchestra has also co-commissioned MacMillan’s Credo for chorus and orchestra alongside the BBC Philharmonic, De Doelen Rotterdam and the Grafenegg Festival.
