Intermusica is delighted to be bringing the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig and Gewandhauskapellmeister Riccardo Chailly to the BBC Proms for a pair of concerts in September.

The first concert (1 September) pays tribute to past Gewandhauskapellmeister and composer Felix Mendelssohn. At the core of this programme, Nicolai Znaider will perform Mendelssohn Violin Concerto in E minor which is complemented by two concert overtures, Ruy Blas and The Fair Melusine. This will be followed by the original version of his 'Reformation' Symphony.

The next evening, the Gewandhaus will perform Mahler’s Sixth Symphony, following the orchestra's successful Mahler festival in Leipzig last season which saw all ten Mahler Symphonies performed by the Gewandhaus and invited guest orchestras. Preceding this, the orchestra and Chailly will perform Messiaen’s Et exspecto resurrectionem mortuorum,  a memorial to the dead of two world wars, commissioned by Andre Malraux and written and orchestrated by Messiaen in 1964.

Following this tour, the orchestra and Maestro Chailly have a busy start to the 2012/13 season, including performances at Salle Pleyel, Paris, National Concert Hall, Dublin, and Birmingham’s Symphony Hall.
