James MacMillan enjoys a celebration of his music this summer as Composer in Residence at the Grafenegg Festival, following in the prestigious footsteps of previous Composers in Residence Krzysztof Penderecki, Heinz Holliger, Tan Dun, Cristobal Halffter and
HK Gruber.
The residency includes a Grafenegg commission and two concerts featuring MacMillan’s dual roles of composer and conductor. He conducts Into the Ferment with the Youth Orchestra of Lower Austria, followed by an all-British programme of MacMillan, Britten and Vaughan Williams with the Tonkünstler Orchestra in which Credo, co-commissioned by Grafenegg Festival, receives its Austrian premiere.
MacMillan’s music is championed throughout the festival, with the opening concert heralded by his fanfare They saw the stone had been rolled away, as well as the seminal Veni, Veni Emmanuel with Colin Currie and the Oslo Philharmonic and Saraste. As part of the residency MacMillan directs ‘Ink Still Wet’, a course of seminars and workshops for young composer-conductors in which he guides and advises the composers as they conduct their own music with the Tonkünstler Orchestra, culminating in a final concert on 27 August.
