On October 11 Susan Bickley will make her Los Angeles Philharmonic debut singing Knussen’s Where the Wild Things Are under the baton of Gustavo Dudamel.
The work is an adaptation of the hugely popular book by the late Maurice Sendak, who also penned the libretto. Knussen composed the music over the period 1979 to 1983, on commission from the Opèra National, Brussels, and a revised version was later presented during the Glyndebourne Opera Festival.
Where the Wild Things Are is presented as part of a co-production by the Barbican, London, Aldeburgh Music and the Los Angeles Philharmonic with further performances on October 12, 13 and 14 at the Disney Hall and on November 3 at the Barbican.
“Susan Bickley gave an inkling of what her Ortrud in Welsh National Opera’s Lohengrin might be like as Max’s voluminous, vacuuming Mama...”
Hugh Canning, Sunday Times, June 2012 (Where the Wild Things Are / Aldeburgh Opera)
