Following extensive renovation since 2005, the Bolshoi Theatre’s main stage was reopened in a gala concert on October 28 conducted by Chief Conductor and Music Director Vassily Sinaisky. An all-Russian programme featured Natalia Dessay, Violeta Urmana, Angela Gheorghiu and Dmitri Hvorostovsky.

President Medvedev was present and opened the night with a speech emphasizing the theatre's symbolism. "We have, of course, a very big country, but one with a small number of unifying symbols. The Bolshoi is one of our greatest."

Vassily Sinaisky is in his second season as the Bolshoi’s Chief Conductor and Music Director. One of the highlights of this season will be a new production of Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier with the British director Stephen Lawless, the Bolshoi’s first ever production of this opera.
