Two Intermusica singers, Joyce Didonato and Iain Paterson, star in productions at New York’s Metropolitan Opera this winter.

Mezzo soprano Joyce DiDonato is the star of an amazing world premiere work for lovers of baroque opera, which opens in style on New Year’s Eve. The Enchanted Island boasts the greatest singers, stunning music and a story drawn from Shakespeare in which the lovers from A Midsummer Night’s Dream are shipwrecked on the island from The Tempest. The work was inspired by the musical masques and pastiches of the 18th century, displaying the virtuosic arias and beautiful ensembles by the great composers of the period including Handel, Vivaldi and Rameau, with a new libretto by Jeremy Sams. The production also features soprano Elizabeth DeShong.

Iain Paterson will return to the Metropolitan Opera for the first time since his debut to sing the role of Gunther in Wagner’s Götterdämmerung, part of the house’s new production this season by Robert Lépage of the complete Ring Cycle. The starry cast includes renowned Wagnerian Deborah Voigt as Brünnhilde, Waltraude Meier as Waltraute and Fabio Luisi conducting. The opera opens on 27 January 2012, with a further five performances after that running until February 11.
