Cristian Orosanu, the young Romanian conductor, is the new Assistant Conductor to Ingo Metzmacher at the DSO in Berlin. He has also made several important debuts in recent seasons and is quickly establishing his name beyond the borders of his native country.
He has conducted the Orchestre de Paris and the Orchestre National de Bordeaux of which Le Monde de la Musique wrote, "The young Romanian conductor Cristian Orosanu conducted … with a beautiful sense of phrase and architecture. … Orosanu's direction was infallible with a rare accuracy of style, more elegant and concise than is customary...". He recently gave a series of concerts with the Orchestre de Bretagne and later this season Orosanu will make his debut with the Tonhalle Orchestra and Porto Symphony Orchestra. He has successfully conducted his first concerts with the DSO Berlin, and will conduct more of these throughout the season.
Orosanu has also worked with the Orchestre Lamoureux and the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra, conducting the latter at the Malko Competition in 2005, where he was awarded Second Prize. In 2003, Orosanu was engaged to conduct the Orchestre de Paris at the Aix en Provence festival, the year that all performances in the festival were cancelled due to strikes.
In Japan, Orosanu has developed a relationship with a new, young and dynamic orchestra, the Hyogo Performing Arts Center Orchestra. Whilst assisting Yutaka Sado on a production of Madame Butterfly with the orchestra last summer, he conducted an orchestral programme of Enescu, Lalo and Rimsky-Korsakov. At the start of last season he conducted Stravinsky's Rite of Spring in Kobe (Japan).
Orosanu continues to conduct extensively in his native Bucharest where he has developed an extensive repertoire in both the symphonic and operatic field He has a close relationship with the Orchestre National de la Radio de Bucharest and has held positions with the National Opera in Bucharest and the regional house, the Romanian Opera in Cluj. He now holds the title of Permanent Conductor of the Brasov Philharmonic. He is a past recipient of the nationally acknowledged Romanian Prix de la Critique Musicale.
Prior to his conducting career, Orosanu was a highly respected horn player and played for five years with the Orchestre National de la Radio de Bucharest. He was then awarded a bursary to study at the Internationale Bachakademie in Stuttgart with Helmuth Rilling.
Orosanu is an accomplished linguist and speaks fluent French, English, Italian, German and Spanish and is also learning Japanese. Last year, he completed his doctoral thesis on "Tempo and dramatic sense in the Operas of Mozart".
