International Chamber Music Season
In 1990, in collaboration with London's Southbank Centre, Intermusica began the first ever chamber music series at that venue. Due in no small part to an acclaimed long-term residency by the Alban Berg Quartet, the International Chamber Music Season rapidly developed a reputation as one of the outstanding concert series of the world.
Other musicians to have performed in the series include the likes of Thomas Adès, Emanuel Ax, Joshua Bell, Alfred Brendel, Steven Isserlis, Gidon Kremer, Maria Joao Pires, Vadim Repin, Andras Schiff and Mitsuko Uchida, as well as the Emerson, Hagen, Takacs and Zehetmair quartets.
Twenty years later, the series continues to present the world's major artists and ensembles, as well as devising, commissioning and producing original projects. Recent highlights include Artist Focuses on Richard Goode, Viktoria Mullova and Leonidas Kavakos; special projects with Mitsuko Uchida as part of Southbank Centre's Messiaen festival; and the current acclaimed Beethoven cycle by Southbank Centre's resident ensemble, the Takacs Quartet. Future highlights include a programme of Schubert, Schoenberg and Mahler with Sir Simon Rattle conducting chamber ensembles from Berlin Philharmonic.
