  • India

Intermusica has invested time, energy and creative ideas into this exciting new market for classical music, pioneering the development of orchestral touring in a country with a population of over 1.2 billion people.

India is a country with a rich musical history and heritage of its own as well as a growing interest and hunger for live experience and interaction with Western music. Intermusica is forging the way creating connections with local promoters, suppliers and organisations to build the infrastructure for wider touring in this incredible country.

    Orchestre de la Suisse Romande
Intermusica toured the Geneva-based Orchestre de la Suisse Romande under Osmo Vanska for two concerts in Mumbai in May 2016. The visit formed part of a wider tour which also visited China for three concerts. Both concerts at the National Centre for Performing Arts in Mumbai showcased the French violinist Renaud Capucon in works by Beethoven, Saint Saens and Ravel.

The orchestra also performed a selection of excerpts from Prokofiev’s Romeo & Juliette, fitting in the 400th anniversary year of Shakespeare’s death. The visit marked the orchestra’s debut in India which was sponsored by Pro Helvetia.

    London Symphony Orchestra
March 2014 saw the return of the London Symphony Orchestra to the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Mumbai, the city’s major cultural centre, following previous performances in 2010.

The LSO performed two concerts conducted by Daniel Harding. The orchestra also undertook an open rehearsal attended by local school children and for some musicians there was involvement at music outreach initiative Songbound, working with some of India’s poorest and most marginalised children.

    BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra
Working in partnership with the British Council and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Intermusica was an integral part of developing and delivering a tour of mini-residencies in three of India’s major cities for the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra.

Featuring not just concerts but workshops, talks, family concerts and outreach events in Chennai, Delhi and Mumbai, this project was designed to reach as far as possible into the country and saw over 6,000 people experience the BBCSSO’s music making.

    Asia: 3 orchestras, 3 cities, 2 days

In March 2014, Intermusica brought three major symphonic tours to Asia that coincided across two days in March in three cities: Mumbai, Shanghai and Taipei. Click here to watch the video.

For major projects such as these, Intermusica is involved from creative planning to delivery of a professional and personalised service to our partner orchestras. These three projects all aimed to inspire, educate and make a difference to the audiences they were performing to, something that Intermusica aspires to with every international tour we undertake.

The Gewandhausorchester Leipzig with Kapellmeister Riccardo Chailly were in residency at the Shanghai Oriental Arts Centre performing Mendelssohn, Shostakovich and Mahler. The entire project was live streamed online into ten concert halls across China.

At the same time, 5,000 miles away, Daniel Harding led the London Symphony Orchestra in two concerts in the NCPA Mumbai, marking the orchestra’s second visit there since Intermusica first facilitated their return to the city after over forty years in 2010.

In Taipei, Iván Fischer conducted the Budapest Festival Orchestra for a pair of concerts conducting Beethoven, Schubert, Borodin and Bruckner’s colossal Symphony No.8. Intermusica violinist Renaud Capuçon joined the project to perform the Glazunov Violin concerto.

    BBC NOW South America

In November 2015 the BBC National Orchestra of Wales embarked on a landmark tour of South America, to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the arrival of the Welsh community in Argentinian Patagonia.

Intermusica is frequently asked to develop tours around individual concerts by performers and orchestras. This helps our clients by giving them exposure in parts of the world they don’t often visit as well as making the numbers more attractive.

We have worked with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales (BBC NOW) over many years and oversaw its debut in China and concerts at the Het Concertgebouw Amsterdam.

The orchestra approached us to develop a schedule in South America centred on an appearance in Patagonia. This marked the 150th anniversary of the arrival of Welsh settlers in the country. Intermusica has a strong network of reliable partners in South America, where there is a desire for contemporary music together with popular classical repertoire. We are in tune with what individual venues would like to have performed and are able to connect that to repertoire BBC NOW would be keen to play.

As well as performing in the highly esteemed Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires, BBC NOW performed at the recently opened CorpArtes concert hall in Santiago. The tour also included bookings in cities including Montevideo, Rosario and Cordoba.

Intermusica’s ability to plan an itinerary which is both comfortable for the performers and efficient for the finances is crucial to the success of ventures such as these. Our contacts and understanding of the market make us ideally placed to deliver high level tours in this region.
