A 2018 graduate of the International Opera Studio Zürich, 24 year old fast rising baritone Huw Montague Rendall is quickly establishing himself as one of the most interesting talents to watch. Following his debut with Festival d’Aix-en-Provence where he sang Harlequin in a new production of Ariadne auf Naxos, Montague Rendall embarks on the 18/19 season with engagements such as Schaunard La bohème at Opernhaus Zürich, Marcello in Barrie Kosky’s new production of La bohème at Komische Oper, Prince of Mantua Fantasio at Garsington Opera and Harlequin Ariadne auf Naxos at Théâtre des Champs-Élysées. On the concert platform he performs Mendelssohn’s Die Erste Walpurgisnacht with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. Further debuts include Papageno Die Zauberflöte, Guglielmo Così fan tutte and Pelleas Pelleas and Melisande.
An alumnus of the Royal College of Music, Montague Rendall trained under the tutelage of Russell Smythe, having previously studied under David Rendall and Philip Doghan. In summer 2016 Montague Rendall was as a Jerwood Young Artist with Glyndebourne Festival Opera, where he sang the role of Fiorello Il barbiere di Siviglia for which he was also awarded the much-coveted John Christie Award 2016. The following summer he joined the prestigious Young Artist Programme at the Salzburg Festspiele where he made his debut in the role of Second Apprentice Wozzeck.
During his two seasons in Zürich, his roles included Nardo La finta giardiniera, Nazarener Salome, Yamadori in a new production of Madama Butterfly, Deputati Don Carlo, Foreman 3 Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk District and Ramiro L’Heure Espagnole.
Other operatic appearances include his debut with Garsington Opera in Death in Venice, the title role Le Nozze di Figaro; Archibald Grosvenor Patience by Sullivan; Aeneas Dido and Aeneas, Dr Falke Die Fledermaus and Bartley Riders to the Sea with British Youth Opera.
On the concert platform he has performed a Duruflé Requiem with the RTE National Symphony Orchestra and many concerts around the UK ranging from solo song recitals to sacred works by Brahms, Handel, Stainer, Fauré, Finzi and Vaughan Williams. Appearances include a recital at the Oxford Lieder Festival and concerts featuring Haydn’s Missa in Angustiis and Missa Sancti Nicolai.

Vocally, the evening was in good hands, starting from Huw Montague Rendall’s Fiorello, who, in his Proms debut, showed an exciting stage presence and honeyed baritone that demonstrated that he is a Figaro to watch for in the future.
Huw Montague Rendall was a consummately suave, personable Falke, his singing and acting equally authoritative, and he was light on his feet in all the banter.
