Celebrated Swedish soprano Ingela Brimberg is renowned for her engaging portrayals of opera’s dramatic heroines. Brimberg sang her first Brünnhilde in Theater an der Wien’s Ring Cycle in the 2017/18 season, having already impressed as Senta Der fliegende Holländer, Elsa Lohengrin, and as Strauss’s heroines Elektra and Salomé, in several major European houses.
Brimberg will begin an exciting 2019/20 season singing her first Isolde Tristan und Isolde in a new production for Oper Köln. Other engagements this season include Mahler’s Ruckert lieder and Isolde’s Liebestod in concert with Südwestdeutsche Philharmonie Konstanz, Eva in Sebastian Fagerlund’s new opera Höstsonaten for Finnish National Opera, Senta Der fliegende Hollander at the Deutsche Oper Berlin and Brünnhilde Die Walküre at the Teatro Real Madrid. Further ahead Ms Brimberg performs Leonore Fidelio at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Elektra and her first Turandot at the Grand Theatre de Genève, among other debuts to be announced.
Brimberg opened her 2018/19 season as Salomé in a new Ted Huffman production for Oper Köln, followed by Brünnhilde Die Walküre for Opéra National de Bordeaux.
Ingela Brimberg’s first sensational Sentas were performed in concerts in France, Austria and Spain (Mo Minkowski), and a recording was released by Naïve. She has since performed this role to critical acclaim at Theater an der Wien (with Marc Minkowski), Oper Köln, Staatsoper Hamburg, Deutsche Oper Berlin and at the Teatro Real Madrid. Other successes include title role Salome at the Teatro Verdi in Trieste and Göteborg Opera; Elsa Lohengrin at La Monnaie; title role Tosca for Oper Köln, Göteborg Opera and Finnish National Opera; title role Aida for Malmö Opera; Elettra Idomeneo for Opéra de Lyon and Göteborg Opera; title role Elektra for Opéra National de Bordeaux and Staatstheater Kassel, and Chrysothemis in a concert version of Elektra at the Verbier Festival.
For her La Monnaie debut Brimberg appeared as Valentine Les Huguenots (conducted by Minkowski and named the best production of year 2011 in Opernwelt) and she made her Royal Swedish Opera debut in spring 2013 as Ellen Orford Peter Grimes.
In her illustrious career, Brimberg has performed a wide range of repertoire. Having sung mezzo roles like Rosina and Cherubino, she made her soprano debut singing Konstanze Die Entführung aus dem Serail with Folkoperan, Stockholm in 2003. She also later performed Amelia Un ballo in Maschera, Donna Anna Don Giovanni (Folkoperan), the title roles of Jenufa (NorrlandsOperan), Katja Kabanova (the Göteborg Opera), Lady Macbeth in Verdi’s Macbeth (Toulon Opera), the title role Elektra in a spectacular production by La Fura dels Baus in Umeå (European Capital of Culture), released on DVD (Unitel Classica), title role Manon Lescaut (the Danish National Opera), and Sieglinde in concerts of Die Walküre with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and Daniel Harding.
Brimberg has collaborated with some of the finest conductors, including Marc Minkowski, Donald Runnicles, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Daniel Harding, Francois-Xavier Roth, Leif Segerstam, Sakari Oramo and Pablo Heras-Casado, to name a few. She is renowned for her stagecraft abilities and interpretations of the most complex and demanding of opera’s dramatic soprano heroines.
