Marianne Beate Kielland is established as one of the foremost singers of Scandinavia, and is one of few Norwegian singers to have received a Grammy nomination. The versatile mezzo-soprano started her international career as an ensemble member of the Staatsoper Hannover, and since then she has been working frequently with leading orchestras and ensembles and enjoying a vast concert repertoire spanning from early 17th century works through to Classical, Romantic and the contemporary eras.
Highlights of the 2018/19 season include Mozart Requiem and Beethoven Symphony No 9 with Bach Collegium Japan; Christmas Oratorio with Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra; Bach Cantatas with Gulbenkian Orchestra, Matthew Passion at the Aix en Provence Festival; Mozart Requiem in Grafenegg; Mahler Symphony No 2 with Szczecin Philharmonic Orchestra, and Missa Solemnis with Singapore Symphony orchestra.
Kielland is in demand for Baroque operatic roles and in 2018 sang the title role in Handel Ottone with Moscow Chamber Orchestra in the work’s Russian premiere.
Her recent symphonic and oratorio appearances include Mahler Symphony No 8 with BBC National Orchestra of Wales and Thomas Søndergård at BBC Proms 2018, Mahler Symphony No 8 with Danish National Symphony, Bach Christmas Oratorio with the Gulbenkian Orchestra, Beethoven Symphony No. 9 with the Bergen Philharmonic, Messiah with Malmö Symphony, Bach St John Passion and St. Matthew Passion and Beethoven Symphony No. 9 with Oslo Philharmonic, St Matthew Passion with BBC Philharmonic, and Haydn Seven Last Words with L'Orchestre de Chambre de Genève, Bach St John Passion with the NDR Radiophilharmonie, Beethoven Symphony No. 9 with Swedish Chamber Orchestra and at the Sydney Opera House, Mahler Symphony No. 2 and Das Lied von der Erde with Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra, Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen with Trondheim Symphony Orchestra, Berio Folksongs with Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra.
In the United States she recently sang Mahler Songs of a Wayfarer with Rune Bergmann for the Grand Rapids Symphony and the New Jersey Symphony, and travelled to Canada to sing Mendelssohn Symphony No 2 with the Calgary Philharmonic.
Marianne has appeared with other major orchestras and ensembles including Wiener Symphoniker, Norwegian Radio Orchestra, Gothenburg Symphony, Iceland Symphony, Mahler Chamber Orchestra, Royal Flemish Orchestra, Akademie für alte Musik Berlin, Concerto Köln, Europa Galante, Les Talens Lyriques, RIAS Kammerchor, Anima Eterna, Le Concert des Nations, Collegium Vocale Gent and Bach Collegium Japan; and has worked with such distinguished conductors as Rinaldo Alessandrini, Fabio Biondi, Fabio Luisi, Harry Christophers, Thomas Dausgaard, John Fiore, Philippe Herreweghe, Manfred Honeck, René Jacobs, Nicholas Kraemer, Andrew Manze, Marc Minkowski, Vasily Petrenko, Daniel Reuss, André de Ridder, Helmut Rilling, Christophe Rousset, Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Federico Maria Sardelli, Jordi Savall, Masaaki Suzuki, Thomas Søndergård and Robin Ticciati.

Kielland has made more than 40 CD recordings of oratorios, operas, cantatas and songs by Bach, Handel, Vivaldi, Caldara, Scarlatti, Beethoven, Schumann, Mussorgsky, Martin, Chausson, Korngold, von Suppé, Schönberg, Webern, Berg and Sigurd Islandsmoen. In 2012 she was nominated for a GRAMMY Award in the Best Classical Vocal Solo category for the album Veslemøy Synsk, which features works by composers Edvard Grieg and Olav Anton Thommesen. She performs regularly with pianist Nils Anders Mortensen and the duo have appeared in Norway, Germany Estonia, Russia and Finland.
