Paul Grant

Baritone

  • British baritone Paul Grant is a recent graduate of the Royal Academy of Music, and in 2019/20 became the second British singer to join the prestigious Accademia Teatro alla Scala in Milan since the programme began. Main stage roles performed through the Accademia include Grégorio in Gounod Roméo et Juliette, Ein Kappadozier in Strauss Salome, Wigmaker in Strauss Ariadne auf Naxos and Dandini for their children’s performances of Rossini La Cenerentola, leading to reinvitations for roles including Sebastian in Adès The Tempest and Conte in Mozart Le nozze di Figaro (Accademia).

    Highlights of Grant’s 2023/24 season include his return to La Scala for Figaro in Rossini Il barbiere di Siviglia with the Accademia and, on the concert platform, performing as soloist in Vaughan Williams Da nobis Pacem for the Princess of Asturias Foundation.

  • Recent seasons for Grant have showcased prestigious engagements including his house and role debut as Priest and Armed Man in Mozart Die Zauberflöte at the Opéra de Rouen Normandie and, on the concert platform, performances of Duruflé Requiem with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra at the Edinburgh International Festival, Handel Messiah under the baton of Sir James MacMillan and Brahms Ein deutches Requiem with the RTVE Symphony Orchestra. In the 2018/19 season, Grant was an Alvarez Young Artist at Garsington Opera where he appeared in performances of Smetana The Bartered Bride, Offenbach Fantasio, and Monteverdi Vespers of 1610 as well as covering the role of Sparck in Fantasio.


    Prior performance highlights include a gala concert at Victoria Hall, Geneva, recitals at the Queen’s Gallery Buckingham Palace, Wigmore Hall, Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Aberdeen International Youth Festival, Leeds Lieder and Oxford Lieder Festivals and masterclasses with Thomas Quasthoff and Sir Simon Keenlyside.


    Grant was born in Edinburgh and studied with Glenville Hargreaves and Jonathan Papp at the Royal Academy of Music where he was a member of the Academy Song Circle and was a soloist for the RAM/Kohn Foundation Bach Cantata Series. He was a Britten Pears Young Artist, alumnus of the Georg Solti Accademia di Bel Canto and won the 2018 Richard Lewis/Jean Shanks Award.
