Rupert Enticknap


  • Rupert Enticknap is one of Britain’s leading young countertenors. He recently sang the role of Farinelli alongside Oscar-winning actor Mark Rylance in the Olivier Award nominated play Farinelli and the King in London’s West End. Last season he made his Glyndebourne debut as Rosencrantz in Brett Dean’s Hamlet under the baton of Vladimir Jurowski.

  • In the 2017/18 season, Enticknap reprises the role of Rosencrantz in Hamlet for Glyndebourne on Tour, as well as for the Adelaide Festival. He will also sing Tolomeo in Handel Giulio Cesare for the Kilkenny Festival and at St John’s Smith Square for Early Opera Company with Christian Curnyn; Messiah on tour with the Gabrieli Consort, and a concert tour with the Israel Camerata.

    Enticknap has recently sung Valentiniano in Gluck Ezio for Oper Frankfurt; Sorceress in Dido and Aeneas for La Nuova Musica with David Bates at the Brighton Festival and St John’s Smith Square; the title role in Handel Tamerlano for Buxton Festival; Pisandro in Monteverdi Il ritorno d’ Ulisse in patria at the Staatstheater Darmstadt, and the title role in a concert performance of Glass Akhnaten at the festival MITO SettembreMusica in Turin and Milan. Other recent highlights included a new production of Gassmann L’Opera Seria at the Théâtre de la Monnaie as well as Steffani Amor vien dal Destino at the Staatsoper Berlin, both under the baton of René Jacobs, The European in Maurizio Kagel Mare Nostrum with the Wiener Kammeroper, and Vivaldi L’Oracolo in Messenia with Fabio Biondi and Europa Galante.

    As a company member of the Junges Ensemble des Theater an der Wien his roles included Human Fragility/Pisandro in Monteverdi Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria, Mirteo in Vinci/Handel Semiramide, and the title roles in Handel Orlando and Radamisto with René Jacobs and the Freiburger Baroque Orchester.

    Other successes have included the title role of Handel Riccardo Primo, Unulfo in Handel Rodelinda, Olindo in Opera Settecento’s modern revival of the Handel/Vinci pasticcio Elpidia, all for the London Handel Festival; Lichas Hercules with the English Concert and Harry Bicket in London, Paris and Vienna; Arasse in Hasse Il Siroe and Apollo in Vinci Il Medo with Ensemble Serse, Ottone in Monteverdi L’incoronazione di Poppea at the Innsbruck Festival and Ascalax in Telemann Orpheus for Classical Opera. Enticknap also appeared in the world premiere of Max Richter’s Sum for ROH2/The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, directed by Wayne McGregor, and in The Royal Opera’s acclaimed production of Cavalli L’Ormindo at Shakespeare’s Globe, London.

    Enticknap’s oratorio and concert performances have included Bach Christmas Oratorio and Mass in B Minor with Ensemble Prisma Wien, Bach St Matthew Passion, Handel Theodora and Israel in Egypt, Mozart Requiem, Handel Ode for the Birthday of Queen Anne in the UK, Carmina Burana in Prague, Handel Solomon at Linz’s Brucknerhaus, Purcell Come Ye Sons of Art and Vivaldi Stabat Mater with The Ten Tors Orchestra, and Dido and Aeneas at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam with Collegium Vocale Gent. In recital he has performed at the Resonanzen Festival at the Wiener Konzerthaus, Wiener Kammeroper and Innsbruck Festival.

    Enticknap was a chorister at Magdalen College, Oxford, and subsequently won choral scholarships at Wells Cathedral and King’s College, London. He achieved a ‘distinction’ in his Master’s degree as a David Laing Scholar at the Royal College of Music, studying with Russell Smythe, continuing his studies there at the RCM’S prestigious International Opera School. On completion of studentship Enticknap took both the opera and lieder prizes at Stella Maris 2013, and prizes at the International Singing Competition for Baroque Opera Pietro Antonio Cesti and the Kammeroper Schloss Rheinsberg International Singing Competition.
