  • The stories told by classical music masterpieces are brought to life through real-time synchronisations of films with live orchestral performance. The films are created by Dutch film director Lucas van Woerkum.

Using customised software, Van Woerkum follows the conductor and orchestra's interpretation, matching tempi and dynamics to create a visual layer as he performs as 'image soloist'.

  • In contrast to the modern 'film live in concert' format, the film responds to the music. Conductors and orchestras are free to perform completely unrestricted and interpret the music as they wish, whilst the audience is drawn even deeper into the stories of the music.

Symphonic Cinema debuted in 2010, and in 2015 the first feature-length production (Stravinsky The Firebird) received five sell-out performances at the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam.

There are opportunities available for co-commissioning partners to invest in future Symphonic Cinema productions.

Lucas van Woerkum, Film director

Lucas van Woerkum (1982) studied Film Directing at the Utrecht School of the Arts, and French Horn at Fontys Conservatory Tilburg. Lucas makes dramafilms based on symphonic music and directs music documentaries. He graduated in 2004 with the film Mahler: Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen. The film portrays Riccardo Chailly and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Mahler’s 9th symphony. The film premiered in the Holland Festival and was shown in the Auditorium of the Louvre in Paris.

Lucas has made music documentaries for television on composers Arvo Pärt, Willem Jeths and Michel van der Aa. In 2007 Lucas turned his focus to drama films after being selected by the Dutch Filmfund to direct the short film To Anna. Since then, he transforms stories in classical music into film scenarios. These Symphonic Cinema films are projected in concert halls where Lucas performs the editing of the films live from within the orchestra. Highlights in this new genre include The Isle of the Dead (2011) and Firebird (2014).

Producers of Symphonic Cinema

Symphonic Cinema is produced by Wim Lehnhausen (1957) & Dik van der Stroom (1959).
Their film credits are diverse, and include over 40 international feature films, at least 1000 commercials & corporate films and a number of television series, including working alongside internationally acclaimed film directors including Stanley Kubrick, Ridley Scott and John Badham, as well as actors such as Colin Firth, Val Kilmer and Stephen Fry.

In 2010 Dik and Wim took over Amsterdam Studios, the oldest (1932) film studios in The Netherlands.
Since their schooldays Dik & Wim have been very close friends and together they have built up different businesses. In the early nineties they established a production service unit for the film industry ‘And Company Management services’ through which they made major contributions to the Dutch film industry.

"Film as an extra voice in the orchestra... Why hasn't anybody ever thought of this before... With his version of Firebird, Van Woerkum has introduced a new fresh way of looking at a fusion of music and film and with his bold project, breathes new life into performances of symphonies around the world."

Joep Stapel, NRC Handelsblad, 26 January 2015

"What’s wonderful about the collaboration is that Lucas with his technology can follow the music in a way that the musicians still have the freedom to express themselves"

Mark Wigglesworth (Conductor), October 2014

"Crossing borders, Lucas van Woerkum performs classical music to a new dimension and a new audience, with touch-screen as a tool and film as overtone. For his Symphonic Cinema, he utilizes the hidden stories of classical compositions. He brings treasures, he surprised the audience with his visual interpretations."

Maarten Corbijn, HP/DeTijd, March 2011

"Filmmaker Lucas van Woerkum showed perfectly timed shots that evoke relevant associations without telling an educational story"

Floris Don, NRC Handelsblad, February 2011

"Working with Lucas has been a great experience. Not only does he have an immense talent as a Film maker, one feels he is also making music through his live editing performance. As the conductor, I felt as free as in any other concert, yet the audience enjoyed a totally new experience of The Firebird."

Pablo Gonzalez (Conductor), February 2016
