The BBC Symphony Orchestra (BBC SO) has played a central role at the heart of British musical life since its inception in 1930. It provides the backbone of the BBC Proms, performing around a dozen concerts at the festival every year, including the First and Last Nights. Intermusica has toured the BBC SO since 1998, to countries including Spain, Monaco and Switzerland.
The BBC SO has a strong commitment to 20th century and contemporary music and has commissioned and given premiere performances throughout its history, including most recently works by Esa-Pekka Salonen and Colin Matthews.
Conductors that work regularly with the BBC SO include Sakari Oramo who holds the post of Principal Conductor, Semon Bychkov and Conductors Laureate Sir Andrew Davis and Jiří Bělohlávek.
The BBC SO is committed to innovative education work and we aim to bring some of these projects to the Orchestra’s international touring.
