Established in 1916, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra’s mission is ‘to make music of the highest quality and to enhance Baltimore and Maryland as a centre of cultural interest, vitality and importance’. Resident at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, the orchestra performs over 130 concerts per year and has one of the most extensive education and outreach programmes of any US orchestra, including its award-winning ‘OrchKids’ project designed to inspire children in during & after-school activities and affect positive social change within the Baltimore City communities.
In 2007, Marin Alsop was appointed the orchestra’s 12th Music Director, the first woman to achieve such a title at a major US orchestra. Since then Marin has taken the orchestra on to new artistic heights, expanding the orchestra’s recording catalogue including Grammy Award winning recordings and widening interest in and access to classical music through education and her strong belief that ‘music has the power to change lives’.
